Cleaning up the climate crisis

SUSTAINABLE TREATMENT OF ORGANIC WASTE FOR A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT

With 20 years of experience in the international development cooperation, we founded our waste management company HANKE in Colombia, Latin America in 2018.

The aim is to tackle the climate crisis where solutions are most urgently needed.

As a service provider in the resource management sector, we create technical solutions directly from the environment of an emerging country in order to drive strong and sustainable local development.

TURNING THE WHEEL OF THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY TOGETHER

With a focus on the circular economy, we produce biogas and fertilizer from organic waste and livestock manure. In doing so, we protect the environment, generate clean energy, and avoid climate-damaging CO₂ and methane emissions.

OF DAILY WASTE IS OF ORGANIC ORIGIN

A global view of the waste problem: around 60% of our daily produced waste is of organic origin. Once collected, it is dumped in open landfills in large parts of the world. There, the organic components ferment and release highly climate-damaging methane into the atmosphere.

OF THE WORLD'S POPULATION HAVE NO ACCESS TO TECHNICAL RECYCLING APPROACHES

Recycling techniques used in industrialized countries are not profitable in large parts of the world. Technical approaches to recycling, which are considered the benchmark in industrialized nations like Germany, are not used for 80% of the world’s population. The climate impact of this continued lack of action is significant.

THE CONSEQUENCE:

1

Openly deposited organic waste and animal feces from agriculture cause significant global methane emissions through wild fermentation and contribute massively to climate change. Methane is a greenhouse gas 26 times more harmful to the climate than CO₂. Half of the global warming — 1.11 degrees Celsius since the beginning of the industrial age — has been caused by methane.
2

Fertilizers and organic matter (humus) are lost to landfills on a large scale every day around the world.
SINCE OUR COMPANY WAS FOUNDED IN 2018, WE HAVE BEEN DEDICATED TO THIS TOPIC AND CREATED SOLUTIONS.

THINKING GLOBALLY,
ACTING REGIONALLY

Since December 2023, we are building Colombia’s first agricultural biogas plant for the disposal and recycling of organic waste and livestock manure in collaboration with the national vocational training center SENA.

The plant will go into operation in January 2025. It will produce biogas and organic fertilizer using a robust technology specially developed for the treatment of organic waste.

HANKE:

1

avoids methane emissions in agriculture and landfills
2

produces organic fertilizer and returns the biomass to the natural cycle
3

produces clean energy and thus avoids CO₂ emissions
4

creates jobs and promotes social equity
5

promotes technology transfer and trains specialized staff on site
By making a practical switch to key systems with circularity principles at their core in the energy sector and agriculture, we are making our contribution to achieving global climate neutrality.

We want to set a precedent and use our practical example to show what the key criteria are for implementing large-scale prevention of wild methane emissions by treating organic waste and animal feces.

With the pilot plant currently under construction, we can process around 12 tons of biomass per day into fertilizer and electricity. Once the pilot plant is running, more are to follow.

VALLE DEL CAUCA, LOCATED BETWEEN TWO ANDEAN RIDGES IN THE SOUTHWEST OF COLOMBIA, IS THE MAIN AGRICULTURAL REGION OF THIS COUNTRY

With a mild climate all year round at a moderate altitude, a constant agriculture is possible in the region — up to three harvests per year — where sugar cane and corn crops prevail. Due to the logistical proximity to the Pacific harbor of Buenaventura and the ideal climate, many livestock farms have settled here. As a result, large quantities of manure are generated daily in Valle del Cauca that are not used or treated properly. On the other hand, the vast soils of the region are seriously over exploited and it is urgent to preserve soil fertility for agriculture.

ANAEROBIC DIGESTION AS KEY TECHNOLOGY

We implement anaerobic digestion as a key technology to return the organic substances into the natural cycle and bring life back to the soils.

In this way, we help farmers and urban communities to close the nutrient cycle and maintain the fertility of their soils.

COLLECTION

COLLECTION

Medium-sized farms from the surrounding area deliver the feces from their animals to the biogas plant. Associations of local recyclers deliver municipal organic waste.

TREATMENT

TREATMENT

Through a new application of tried and tested techniques, we have developed a robust technology specifically designed for the treatment of organic waste.
ORGANIC FERTILIZER

ORGANIC FERTILIZER

We produce organic fertilizer that brings life back to the region’s heavily used soils.
CLEAN ENERGY

CLEAN ENERGY

The plant produces clean energy, which is fed into the grid and replaces a proportion of the electricity generated from fossil fuels.
